Hair removal FAQs

Hair contains melanin, which is the pigment in the hair follicle that determines hair colour. The laser emits pure light that is absorbed by the pigment and is transformed into heat; this heat energy effectively destroys the hair follicle without damaging the surrounding cells

You can achieve permanent hair reduction in a short time and improve your skin quality. It also helps eliminate cystic hair and improves problems such as folliculitis.

The laser is placed on the skin and moved over the area to be treated. Short pulses of light are released, which targets the melanin in many hair follicles simultaneously. The process is repeated until the entire area is treated.

It is estimated that as an adult we have 5 million hair follicles all over our body with around 1 million on our head.

Hair follicles anywhere over the body are either:

  1. Lying dormant meaning they will not grow until they are triggered to grow which can happen at any time/age in life. (Hormonal factors may cause new hair to grow where none existed before) Or,
  2. In a growth variation cycle,
    • Anagen – Active growing phase
    • Catagen – Resting phase
    • Telogen – Shedding phase

We can only treat hair in Anagen - active phase i.e. when the cells responsible for hair growth are bound to the hair. Our hair grows at different rates and are in different phases at any given time meaning multiple sessions for laser hair removal is required.

The duration depends on the size of the area to be treated e.g. from 5 minutes the upper lip to 35 minutes legs (can be longer for larger or multiple areas).

The duration of the treatment depends on the type of hair, area to be treated and specific needs of each patient. Only hair that is actively growing is affected, meaning only 20% - 30% of hair is treatable in each session therefore multiple treatments are needed until a satisfactory result is seen but typically 6 or more treatments are needed for optimum results.

We recommend attending sessions every 4-6 weeks in the case of facial hair and every 8-12 weeks in body hair. This is the time it takes on average for inactive follicles to become active. The goal is to destroy as much hair as possible in the fewest sessions.

You will probably need more sessions to get the same result, since not all the hair will go from an inactive to active phase.

The laser is not described as painful no. It has a MOTION work system and a tip cooled at -8ºC to make the treatment comfortable, with this system we apply the power gradually so you will only feel a slight sensation of heat.

With this system you can practically treat all areas of the body except for:

  • bottom of the eyebrow for its proximity to the eye and
  • on tattoos.
  • mucous membranes

There are very few contraindications. The most common are:

  • photosensitizing medication
  • pregnancy
  • breast-feeding
  • No active or faked tanned skin

During consultation a medical history will be taken to establish suitability.

  • We advise you to come with the area shaved and clean skin, without makeup, deodorant, perfume or face/body cream on the area to be treated.
  • One month before and during treatment you should avoid: epilation, Waxing, Plucking, hair removal creams or bleaching, sunbathing, using self-tanners and discolouring hair.
  • There should be no active or fake tan in the area to be treated. Suntans and fake tans must be left to fade before treatment can start.
  • An SPF 30 must be used on the area between treatments
  • Make sure you arrive in good time for your appointment.

The skin may be red immediately after treatment and the hair follicles may be swollen and bumpy. This usually subsides within a few hours. Adverse reactions are rare but may include a small blister or temporary lightening or darkening of the skin.

After treatment you must avoid exposing the area to direct sunlight or do it with full protection using SPF 30+ in the area treated. It can take several days for the treated hair to shed.

Body Contouring FAQs

ProMax Lipo is suitable for most individuals. However, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding treatment is not advisable. It is aimed more at people who are looking to reduce small areas of stubborn fat, who are already roughly the size they want to be. Or it can be used for people who are on some sort of weight loss programme and just need a boost to shift the excess in certain areas.

Improvement is often noticed after only a few sessions, but best results are seen after a full course. The results vary with some people loosing 1-2 inch circumference on somewhere like the abdomen, other's may get a more subtle result. We are all individuals and with fat reduction is does depend on your regime at home. Ideally you should be on a low-fat diet and consider exercise to get the best results.

Treatment is not considered painful, most people find a warm, tingling sensation is felt and a high-pitched sound is heard.

A layer of gel is applied to the treatment area and an applicator moves in circular motions delivering Ultrasound energy. A warm, tingling sensation may be felt but treatment is very comfortable.

We can gain and loose fat quickly sometimes and most of us find our weight fluctuates somewhat. This treatment cannot stop that and therefore you may gain weight again on that area. The fat cells are still there. Some people will have maintenance treatments every 1-3 months to help retain the result, and with good diet and ideally some exercise there is no reason why you can't.
